League Pledge

“To strive for the purity of water, the clarity of air and the wise stewardship of the land and its resources; to know the beauty and understanding of nature, and the value of wildlife, woodlands and open space; to the preservation of this heritage and to man’s sharing in it.”

Ankeny High School Trap Club 2011

The Ankeny Shooting Sports Club had a great year this spring with 84 students participating in trap shooting practices and trap meets. One squad took second in the state at Cedar Falls, and another squad took seventh place. We hosted 3 meets with local teams from central Iowa, with the weather cooperating the majority of the time. Special thanks to all the coaches, parents and donors to the club for their support.

Hunter Safety classes will be held August 20 and 27 this year. The course is a combination of online and hands-on instruction. After completion of the online class, students will get a voucher allowing entry to the field day. Volunteer instructors along with DNR officials conduct the field day featuring live firing, marksmanship and firearm handling plus field experiences including firearm carrying, crossing fences, etc. Members are encouraged to contact the DNR or Ray Morley (964-8903) of our chapter for insturctor training, which will allow our chapter to do more in this important endeavor.

Trap Shooting – Leagues, High School and Practice Shoots

Open Trap Shoots are held every Tuesday at 6:00 to 9:00 PM, weather permitting. Cost of one round of 25 targets is only $4.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members. This is a public event and non-members are always welcome to shoot with us. We now have four newer traps up and running, and lights on each field. One trap machine is equipped for wobble trap, which is popular with our shooters.

Trap Field Usage Members may bring their own clay target throwers to the fields anytime the ranges are open. Please pick up all empty hulls, boxes and refuse from the fields when done. Also please put only corrugated boxes in the east dumpster, and hulls, and all other stuff in the west one. We recycle the box board separately, and all other stuff must be taken to landfills per the DNR’s open burning regulation.

Rifle/Pistol Range

NOTE: When the farmer is working the fields surrounding the grounds, the trap, rifle and pistol ranges are closed. There may or may not be a sign posted at the gate, so it is the responsibility of members to watch for this, and not shoot when field work is in progress. It usually does not take long with the large capacity machinery being used. Please respect our neighbor and tenant farmer when using the ranges.

The Ankeny Practical Shooters holds competition pistol events. There are 2 formats, listed below. New shooters and all skill levels are welcome! Safety Note

As always, please be respectful of your fellow Ikes when using the facility. At the r/p range, when someone is downrange putting up targets, the red lights should be turned on and ALL GUNS UNLOADED ON TABLES OR BENCHS and no one is to be handling any weapon at that time. Safety is first priority, and having fun shooting is second. If anyone sees another shooter performing an unsafe act, respectfully remind them of their error. Most people will NOT be offended and appreciate being reminded or informed of proper conduct at the range.

Expansion of Pistol Ranges Project

We are expanding the Rifle/Pistol range to include four new pistol ranges to the south of the existing range and shelter. This is a huge project that will greatly enhance our facility for our members who are hand gun enthusiasts, and for the several regular pistol events that are held each month, weather permitting. There will be three 50 yard bays, and one 35 yard bay at the south end of the property. We own the entire forty acre tract which includes the fields to the south and east adjacent to the DNR ground. This project has been approved by local entities pending some changes to our existing property and the usual permits, variances and other details involved in construction. Construction will hopefully begin this fall after harvest.

Currently, we are limited to the number of shooting activities that can be held at the range due to our size. When we have an event , we often must close the range to our membership. After the completion of our new ranges, you will see and expanded schedule of activities available to our membership without always having to close the facility.
